Here is a wonderful cake I make that gives me the cake comfort without the sugar hit, it is full of real goodness, enjoy! And yes it is gluten free. It is also high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. A little goes a long way and tastes wonderful.

  • Sugar Substitute: Small amounts of pure maple syrup is the only sugar substitute I would recommend.
  • It will help your palette shift away from the sweet to more bitter sweet.
  • Chocolate: Cut out milk chocolate and replace with say 2 squares (25g) of 70% dark chocolate.
  • On your toast: A limited amount of no-sugar peanut butter is a much better choice than hazelnut chocolate spread or jam.
  • Sauces: Try to cut out some of the prepared conveniences especially in the form of sauces and condiments.
  • Instead of the chocolate try a handful of raw nuts or a small serve of full fat yoghurt with some fresh passionfruit.
  • Go nuts: If you are used to a mid-afternoon sugar hit try switching it to something else.
  • Try to eliminate it gradually, start with dropping it by half a teaspoon at a time. Red wine is a lower fructose option rather than white wine. Try to cut out the sugary mixers in your alcoholic beverages, opt for soda water with a squeeze of lime with your vodka instead of tonic water or lemonade. See recipe suggestion in my previous “Feeling Seedy” blog (blatant cross adverting to my past blog) Make your own to suit your tastes without the sugar load.
  • Create your own breakfast cereal commercially made cereals are stale, packed with sugar and expensive.
  • Here are some practical tips on cutting back sugar and it won’t make you unpopular or miserable. Indeed, I support a reduction in the consumption of sugar this can only benefit us physically and mentally (sugar can alter mood swings). Seriously, you would be better off just enjoying a couple of squares of Lindt Intense Coconut dark chocolate, and it won’t cost you nearly as much in ingredients. There is some goodness in coconut but not in those portions. Yes, its low in sugar but that little recipe is a walking heart attack. For example, one recipe I read for Healthy Bounty Bars contained more than 1 cup of coconut oil, along with 1 cup coconut milk and 2 cups of desiccated coconut and to sweeten 6 tablespoons of rice malt syrup. These ingredients offer little nutrition and can be worse than the sugar or fat they are trying to replace. Many “anti sugar” recipes are full of saturated fats such a coconut oil and questionable sweeteners such as rice malt syrup. My kids will not be going nuts for Cauliflower Pizza anytime soon. Diets need to work for more than the shelf life of a bestselling diet book. One of the major problems I have with these “anti sugar” diets is not just because they rule out a large spectrum of high fibre and highly nutritious foods such as legumes and grains, it’s also unsustainable for the long term and especially in already complex family life. But does this mean you can’t have a few dried prunes on your porridge or a small portion of dried fruit? Look a bit closer at other parts of our lifestyle such as the lack of whole unprocessed fresh foods or insufficient physical exercise. If we look back at our grandparent’s generation there wasn’t the epidemic of diabetes and obesity that we are plagued with now. We place faith in chemical sweeteners that still have question marks against their long term effects. We tend to focus on eating low fat (yet high sugar) foods such as “healthy” branded flavoured yoghurts. The real issue is we just are consuming far too much. The problem I have with some of these diets is they continue to demonise a very natural part of our intake. No, we do not need to follow such draconian laws of eating. Yes, we all need to consume less sugar it is the cause of many of our health and weight problems. Are these diets really functional? Are they worth hopping on the endless bandwagon of self-depravation in order to gain perfect health? My thoughts are a little divided and certainly won’t gain me a spot on breakfast television. You know the ones, like: “I Quit Sugar”, or the more serious “Sweet Poison”.
